Last night it started to snow and after a few hours we had already over 10 centimeters of fresh powder snow. I decided then to set my alarm clock early so to capture the best of the fresh snow at early light.

So this morning I woke up when it was still dark. I decided to only take one lens with me, my set of Lee filters (ND grads and ND’s) and of courses my tripod. Soon after I finished my second cup of tea I looked at the sky and noticed that it was a good one for winter landscape photography.

I wasn't sure if the roads were all save and I decided to stay in my own town and walk to the wonderful shire of the landgrave of Rechteren Limpurg Almelo. I couldn't resist to revisit a spot to take this previously photographed farm. This time from a slightly different point of view and with much better light. See for yourself when you click here.

I am about to leave again because I am going for a, hopefully, nice sunset at the National Park Sallandse Heuvelrug so I do not have much time left for giving critique.

Does that framing provided by the surrounding branches and reeds add zoom to the picture or what?

Brilliant work, Niek. Excellent composition, beautiful subject. Those long shadows created by the low sun on the trees in the distance are brilliant.
I'll be keeping an eye out for your sunsets.

Excellent work,

Hello Niek,

The early morning alarm has paid dividends, here!
This is a fine shot, with an original, natural border completely surounding the scene.
I love how the low light has produced long, lanes of shadow, acting as guides to draw the eyes across the frame.
The snug little house is perfectly positioned in the frame, made even more interesting by hints of light dancing on the roof.
It would have made the perfect Christmas card.

I'm looking forward to you sunset shots!

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Hi Niek,

Hi Niek,
nice landscape!I like this view.

This is so great Niek...your perspective/point of view here is excellent in the way it is presented. The colors are bright, details are razor sharp, lighting is perfect, and this is such a beautiful atmosphere!!!

Very calming and moody for a winter shot. Great capture.

Hoi Niek,

Usually orphaned branches like this would not help an image, but in this shot they are an outstanding feature. The fact that they appear to enter the frame from every side and create a framing effect themselves is terrific. The scene beyond is just beautiful - those long shadows stretching across the ground. It looks freezing cold but indisputably amazing.
Great shot!

Ooohhh, Niek, it's wonderful.
Very cold - and sooo pretty.
The motive is so nice and I love the "natural" frame.
Thanks, greetings

Wow, jij was dus vroeg je bed uit, want toen ik uit mijn raam keek was de lucht al betrokken (8.00 uur) Ik heb de hele dag geen blauw stukje lucht gezien...... :(

Dit is een prachtig plaatje! Met een hele natuurlijke lijst eromheen! Mooi vastgelegd, Niek!

Geniet maar van de Sallandse heuvelrug!

zeer mooie winter ambiance
de natuurlijke kader van die takken is een goede idée en geeft diepte aan de foto

Hi Neik,

A very Happy new year
As a few others have said using the branches as a frame don't usually work, but in this image it works very well, a fine natural frame and lovely scene beyond.

Hello Niek,

your ambitiousness payed off with this great winter scene captured.. lovely lighting and contrast. I really like how the angle of the branches and grass all around the subject are acting like a frame and pulling the eye into the photo.
Nicely seen!

Happy New Year, Niek!
The branches surrounding this winter scene make a nice vignetting, here, focussing our attention on this beautiful house ! Excellent use of the wide angle. The beauty of these winter colors is exceptionally well rendered! Bravo! Annie
