[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This past weekend parts of Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands received some severe weather. It started all on friday afternoon and ended Sunday evening. There was even a fatality on friday. A woman was hit by lighting.

Luckely I did not get any of the bad weather. But 20 kilometers to the south the city of Enschede received a lot of rain in only 45 minutes. Causing a lot of flooding. The result of that thunderstorm can be seen on this photo. This is taken from just outside my house. The storm did get close, but didn't reach my town.

Tech talk: I covered my camera up with a plastic bag, just to be sure that if it would start to rain the camera would stay dry. The photo is taken from my tripod using my cable release. The camera was set to shutter speed priority.

Shot in RAW, converted to JPEG. Small adjustment on levels, USM, Frame, Resize and USM.

The forecast for tonight isn't promising. Rain and thunderstorms are approaching.

really awesome photo here Niek! LOVE the purple and the sharpness of the lightening! Very nice!

Hoi Niek,
Also hunting the lightning! Great nocturnal one with not obly the spectacular lighting in the purple clouds but also the nice lights of the building. Perfect capture my friend. And thanks for the tips, I think I'm going to buy a remote control for my Nikon as well.

Hello, Niek,
This seems to be a very difficult image to be photographed, the sky is very dramatic with very vivid bright colours. Pity that the lady was hit by a lightning.
In my opinion the composition is good, with good use of night lights.
Best regards,

Really Stunning photography, Niek.
Excellent evening picture with the Lighting so clear visual in the sky.
The streetlights around that school? building, makes it a perfect looking photo.
Groeten van Jan

A very good capture, Niek. Overall exposure is spot on. Capturing lightnings involves a great deal of luck, but the tech bit was all up to you and you managed well.
Nice work!

A real beauty Niek... Great colors in the sky and you managed to keep the building and it's lights very natural.

Hi Niek,
Wow, what a great capture, the colour of the sky is excellent and the shot is good and sharp.
Tfs Andy

Good nigh shot with nicely captured lightning.
IMHO the strong light left of tower should be cloned out cause it took to much attention from everything else.

Regards Darko

Hello Niek,
This is a very moody capture, where you capture the essence of the threatning weather very well!
In particular I like the exposure of the lighting, and it is like the houses on the ground just sits there waiting for what may come!

Have you heard the old age "When life gives you lemons, make lemonade?" Maybe the photgrapher's version should be When life gives you thunderstorms, take pictures! It's nice to see you go after an "action" shot like this. It's a wonderful result. You didn't have too close a view, but you did a good job framing the lighting in the building. The hard part was getting the exposures to work, and you did an excellent job with that. Incredible clarity with the plastic bag (or maybe you didn't cover the lens with it).

A good reminder for last nights we have her. Very good colours, details and composition. Well done.
Best wishes,

Hello Niek,

Another beautiful image I saw of the storms that day (Hans has one). Very nicley captured lightning, and over all storm weather. TFS

C'est rare de voir une aussi bonne photo nocturne. Bravo.
Bonne journée.

Hi Niek,

Great catch! Perfect timing! I like the blue light of the building as well, it comes out so bright against that threatening sky! Well done, thanks for your note too. TFS! Bianca.

The mood is dominating in this beautiful image by the violent thundering sky. An excellent nocturnal image. Extreme hues are looking beautiful, well done Niek.

Many thanks for sharing this image.

Hai Niek,
Schitterend getroffen die lichtflitsen op de achtergrond.
Lukt mij nou nooit, komt ook omdat ik er een beetje huiverig voor ben natuurlijk, :)

Hi Niek,
Excellent night shot. Its not easy to get this kind of images, excellent work, the sharpness and clarity is amazing.

Hoi Niek,

Je geduld is zeker beloond hier, wat een mooi opname van de bliksem. Prachtige kleuren, goeie scherpte en een mooie dramatische lucht.
Heel mooi gedaan!

Groetjes, Nel

the lightining is well captured in this lowlight shot. Great focus was achieved.

Well done.
Best regards, Daniel

When I opened this thumbnail my wife was looking over my shoulder and she "gasped". She said "Now that's a great shot" and I fully agreed with her. Thunderstorms called for today here....I might try for the fireworks/lightning combo! :)
I think this is a VERY nice image.....lots of detail in the lightning and clouds which make me keep staring at it instead of your house!
Well done....instead of smiles, how about two gasps?

Gewoon een prachtig nachtje hier. Doei

Nice shot! How many photos did you have to take before you got this shot with the lightning in it? And what does shutter speed priority mean? I really want to get a DSLR... I just have to save money first. :)

Anyhow, I like the picture. The lights on the buildings and the clouds above them are beautiful!

Hi Niek,

Well, I am impressed! How many shots did you have to take to get the lightning? There must have been a LOT of lightning to get that much in 5 seconds. Nice work!

Evelynn : )

Hello Niek!
