There two symbols that distinguish a Roman Catholic Basilica. In Valletta, Malta, the Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is the first Basilica on the Island.

The first symbol of a basilica is the "canopeum" or "ombrellino". In English it is more properly called the pavilion. Only churches of basilican rank are allowed to possess and display this papal emblem. It is a large ornamental umbrella with alternating stripes of bright scarlet and yellow silk terminating in scallops of contrasting colors attached to a wooden umbrella. The silk canopy drapes beneath an ornate finial, a large ball topped by a cross, both in gold.

The second symbol and always accompanying the pavilion is the Tintinabulum or Basilican Bell, probably used in early times to announce the Pope's arrival or a Papal procession, it is now ornamental. The small bell is enclosed within an elaborate baroque frame. The wood carving at the top surmounted by a golden cross includes the papal tiara and crossed keys.

Hi Francis.

I like the comical feel to this as all are hidden from view...it being their choice I mean. I like the strong stance with the guy holding the umbrella type thing.

Hello Francis,
Perfect decisive moment capture. The hidden faces adds mistery. The composition, the light, the color are perfect.
Congrats, mb

Ola Francis,
What matters, really, is here to highlight your presence of mind, and of course all your technical competence.
I imagine that the bearer of the umbrella should have decreased the diameter of the apparatus in order to proceed on the narrow street. That was enough for you produces this mysterious snapshot you show us.
