Mosta is a town situated in the middle of the island of Malta, to the north-west of Valletta. The main attraction in Mosta is the Rotunda - a huge round church with the third largest unsupported dome in the world.

The Church is dedicated to the Assumption. The Feast of the Assumption is held on August 15 and it is a public holiday. The church is also known as the Rotunda of St Marija Assunta. On 9 April 1942, the church was nearly destroyed during World War 2. An Axis bomb pierced the dome of the church but failed to explode. The detonator was removed and a replica bomb is now displayed as a memorial. The Rotunda was designed by George Grognet de Vasse, a French citizen but resident in Mosta. Mosta residents, at that time totalling not more than 1500, built this spectacular church by their own hands. It took them 27 years to complete but the result is a tourist attraction of world standard. Grognet chose the type of stone by insisting on having one slab from each quarry operating in the Islands. He then proceeded to test their durability. In the end he chose a quarry in Mosta near to Ta' Vnezja, at the gate of an old military airfield. The stone of the Rotunda bathes in the sun and spectacularly has taken a yellow/orange/red colour.

This shot was taken from the airplane while landing in Malta on my last holiday in September, 2010.

Very interesting...it is very beautiful.
Um abraço

Hi Francis , what a sunny and rewarding view ! I recall having seen a similar image in your portfolio several months ago perhaps the same town i am not so sure but i was impressed just as i am now , typical Maltese construction planning with streets radiating from the church in square or rectangular blocks so densely compacted , Valette has the same design i believe , Malta is small so no loss of vital ground in erecting new buildings i assume , lucky you to get this kind of view on landing , a reminder of how beautiful Mosta is from the air even admired through an airplane window , you have made the best of the view here , one worthy of a few clicks indeed , thank you for sharing this one my friend ,

Hi Francis.
A wonderful POV and good enough sharpness with awesome DOF where you showed this beauty very well, the warm light spreads all over seems so lovely with no OE but rather captured with accurate exposure and above all how steady shot it is even shot while landing from a window.
Best Regards

I remember the church from our recent holiday. If I am correct the bus passes it by on the way to Mdina. I would have liked the opportunity to take some shots around the church. Maybe next time.... I was impressed with the architecture on Malta and this was not exception. Nice job.

Hi Francis,

The roads in a radial pattern and all meeting at the Rotunda, are very well seen!
Great focus and perfect management of light in this case.
The sharpness and higher POv are well done.
Great golden tones of the historic city.
Well taken!
