The Azure Window is another spectacular natural landmark in Dwejra, Gozo, along with The Inland Sea and Fungus Rock. The Azure Window at the end of the cliff, is a giant doorway, through which one can admire the blue expanse beyond the cliff. It must be one of the most photographed vistas of the Islands, and is particularly spectacular during the winter, when waves crash high inside the arch. The sea around is very deep and of a dark blue hue, which explains why it is called the Azure Window. The rocks in this area are encrusted with fossilized crustaceans, evidence that most of the island was once covered by water. In front of the Azure Window is the Blue Hole, and The Chimney, two of the most popular dive sites in Gozo.

The arch of the Azure Window is disintegrating, as large pieces of rock keep falling from the arch. It is expected that the arch will completely disappear within just a few years. The arch is in a dangerous condition and warning notices are placed to stop people walking over the top of the arch. Evidence of this can be seen when the images of the Azure Window as shown in Clash of the Titans (1981) are compared to the more recent images shown in The Odyssey (1997) and The Count of Monte Cristo (2002). The former images depict the Azure Window arch with a flat underside, whereas the latter images clearly show that a significant proportion the flat underside has since broken away. In April of 2012 a large piece of rock was dislocated and made the window larger, more unstable and losing its almost perfect oblong shape. Once the arch has completely crumbled away, the Azure Window shall be renamed Azure Pinnacle.

Hi Francis
it looks like a giant creature drinking sea water... excellent POV (I've seen it only from the other side). good use of HDR created clear textures and sharp colors. the image has fine depth and scale.

What a stunning seascape Francis, this jumps off the page, even as a thumbnail.
Nice placement of the scenne through the arch, well done.
New Zealand has a similar tourist attraction out of the Bay of Islands, up north.
I have a print somewhere packed away, so mhere is a link to show you our version.

Hi Francis.

An awesomw capture, the colours and texture of the outcrop is amazing, the way the light hits the layers and the weathered sides makes for such a stunning image. The arch and the view thro' adds much coupled with the richness of the waters, truly wonderous.

Hello Francis :)

Monumental, splendid gate through which it would like oneself to swim steels.
Surrounded the the blue of water and sky looks fantastically.
Looking by this the gate I see in people standing over the bank distance. Miraculous rocks, water and sky, their colours and beautiful light, they created the fantastic composition, magnificently by You showed.

With best wishes.
Barbara

Hi Francis,
A very impressive place indeed. I like this POV, obviously taken from a boat? Given what the note says, I would not walk on or sail under this one!

Hi Francis

A good upward pov on the arch & a fine entry in the low pov theme. Wonderful warm cold color contrasts between the red & blue. The arch frames the bg rock shelf superbly & the people add scale. Tfs. Have a great Sunday!

Hello Francis, the HDR has served you well here, the Window looks SO solid! The light was kind to you too, as it highlights all the colours and textures of the rocks.
I like your proximity to the phenomena, and it is good to see the distant cliffs, and the tiny people.
Interesting notes.
Tfs, regards Jean.

Francis,
An excellent image of this sea arch. Your low POV give the view a sense of the scale and the deatil and color are natrually rendered from you PP HDR.
It reminds me of a similar one in Los Cabos, Mexico at the southern tip of the Baja Peninsula.
Nicely Done
