... Brunelleschi's Dome…

Ref: http://www.italyguides.it/

Florence, Italy is the city that gave birth to the Renaissance. From the artwork of Michelangelo, to the scientific advancements of Galileo, Florence has been home to some of the greatest advancements in the arts and sciences. Architecture is no exception.
Often revered for its beauty, and often photographed as the centerpiece to Florence as a city, the Duomo is often overlooked as a breakthrough in engineering. While many people admiring the bas reliefs on the Baptistry, they forget to look up and marvel at the dome of the Duomo - until recently the largest dome in the world.
The construction of the dome was nothing short of a miracle, using construction techniques and truly innovative engineering concepts, Flippo Brunelleschi, the dome's designer, created a Renaissance masterpiece that has not been rivaled.
So, what did this Cupola have that was so amazing?
Brunelleschi had a brilliant idea: modeled on great Roman architecture, like the monumental Pantheon dome, that he'd studied and redesigned as a young man; he designed an octagonal, self-supporting dome, that didn't need a centre, built from different materials: stone down below where the curve was minimum, for greater resistance, and bricks above as they were lighter. Furthermore, the double pensa was formed by two spherical vaults placed one on top of the other, the internal one more than two meters thick and the external one just 80 centimeters.
These two parallel shells are connected by brick 'spurs' and have two different functions: the internal one is the real roofing while the external one, besides protecting from water, is there to thicken the dome profile, making it visible from afar.
But the most talented, really brilliant idea was how the bricks were fitted into each other, 'fishbone fashion', in the way that had been used in Tuscany prior to that, but never in similar circumstances. The secret of this colossal structure's balance lies in this knowledgeable jointing game, making the dome a complex, but perfect mechanical device.
Once finished, the dome was something extraordinary, never seen before.
Two years after the Cupola was finished in 1436, they added the crowning lantern in white marble, taking the total dome height from 91 to 114 metres, a really impressive height, and not just for that era.
'It's as though the sky is envious' wrote Vasari,' as it keeps on shooting thunderbolts down at it, believing that its height has almost exceeded the height of air'.
………………………………………………………………………………………………

Tech: darkened the sky, saturated the colors to add a strong contrast, cropped a bit from the left side and that’s it I guess…………………………………………………………..

Story: It was an unforgettable day (my birthday) for me surrounded by all this beauty and inspiration, taking 10000ss of photos and dealing with a Radio that keeps on saying: “come on now, we need to catch the train, (or we’re hungry)… let your cam rest for a while com’onnnn Suzy” heard it like zillion time during that trip but huh Do you blame me? ……………………………………………………………………… Hum!!!!!! Let’s see! :)

Am gona sound like that radio now and say: com’onnn don’t forget to C/C before you catch the next train :)

Thank you… and Happy Easter:)

dear Suzy,
too vivid the back blue is, that I cannot notice it is Firenze...
your motive is that blue or orange roofs of this old beautiful city,,,
anyway in this contrast, you selected unique point of view, it shows this old basic city jumping to modern time now.
maybe we lost ourselves in this dense buildings between the ancient and the modern...
thank you,
Akihisa

Hello Suzy,

Excellent shot with wonderful colors and great perspective!
Congratulations ans TFS.

Le dôme rouge se détache formidablement bien sur ce fond bleu intense. Très belle composition !
