[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This photo was taken inside the castle walls of «San Gimignano», a charming hill town of 7000 inhabitants, which has preserved its medieval appearance more completely than any other town in Tuscany.

This town stands 334 mts above the sea level on the site of a small Etruscan settlement dating from the Hellenistic period (third to second BC). Its history begins around the Tenth Century.

The town is famous for its numerous towers which make it conspicuous from a great distance and provide one of the most remarkable sights in Italy. It is possible to walk along the 13C walls from which there are fine views of the rich agricultural farm land which surrounds the town.

When in 1199 the town became a free commune, ridding itself of the Feudal ties to the bishop of Volterra, it began its impressive growth as an urban centre.

The terrible palgue of 1348 and a subsequent fall in population dealt a severe blow to the trading economy of San Gimignano.

The deep crisis led the governors of the city to declare their submission to Florence in 1353.However, the beauty of the town and its artistic and architectural importance, have led in recent years to an excellent economic and cultural revival. (*)

Tells the history that the characteristic towers of the town was where the rich families lived in; and the height of each one of these towers gave a public notice of the wealth of each one of these families. Witch means that the more high was the tower richest was the family who inhabited it.

However what impressed me more was the strong and well conserved medieval architecture, and those cosy and narrow streets surrounded by walls and arcs made of stone with the soft touch and the dark tones of very ancient times.

It is this atmosphere that I want to share with you today; hope you like.

Beautiful Tuscany photograph , moving people and beautiful architecture scene with attractive tonal color are golden parts of this photograph.I like the atmosphere.

Black and white works so well here Jose! I think I'd have a great time shooting this town. If it weren't for the people, it would look like a 19th century image. Wonderful shot.

Jim

ciao Jose',

I have never been to S. Gimignano although I always wanted to go... it seems to me a great place full of angles and corners to discover, like this image of yours shows.
I like the way you treat your images, because you always manage to twist the light in a way that, despite the signs of modern life, turns the image into a timeless shot.
Have a nice weekend... =)
