When we first came to San Gimignano I had no idea just how renowned a place it was!
As you can see from the crowds of people toing and froing through the ancient gate, it is a very, very busy place.

It is its towers that characterize this hilltop town.Originally there were 72 towers, now only 14 remain.
They are described as stone skyscrapers.

"Unfortunately, a trip here is number one on everyone's Tuscan tick list, and visitors swarm over it from around Easter to October.Sometimes it feels a bit like a living museum:a place that everyone visits but where no-one lives." [ Footprint /Italia;Tuscany]

"Fortified houses were common in medieval Tuscany.Towers often provided both a refuge and a place from which to bombard enemies. But they were also a status symbol and everyone wanted a big one.Towers grew higher and higher as wealthy families tried to out do one another. In the end it got out of hand and the authorities imposed a limit on their height."

Thanks for looking.

What a wonderful scene you have captured here, Jean!
Light is fantastic and so is the sky.
Exposure is well kept and details of the facade of these historical buildings are nicely shown.
A good shot!

Have a nice weekend.

Kind regards,

Hi Jean, I admire the capture of this ancient gate and the towers - but honestly - I would love it without the crowd of people. beautiful light, lots of details and a nice cloudy sky.
Thanks for sharing - kind regards Monika

Hi Jean,
Yes, I have been here, as has may thousands of tourists any given year. It is a lovely little hill top town, feels as if you are in a very strange and beautiful place because of the so well preserved medieval architecture. Nice capture, would have helped to have less people, but you can not help that.

Good wide angle shot in which you have managed your verticals very nicely. The flow of the crowd leads us inward towards the arch. Nice pov and good details.

Hi Jean,
A beautiful arched entrance to this Italian town of San Gimignano with its Renaissance Architecture. Great details on the walls and facade and of the fourteen dominating towers of the city. I like the action of the people walking towards and from the gate.
Perfect lighting and an agreeable POV.
Well done,

Francis Xavier

Hi Jean.

This is quite an amazing capture.
You give the senese of uneasiness in attacking this fortified building with the angle you use. The walls up high and the entrance like a cauldron of despire for those trying to entry.

I was loosing myself in history then, sorry....... lol
Truthfully, you show the incline so well, the way people lean as they climb. Great rustic colours and sharpness of detail plus very good notes. tfs

stv ;o))

Ciao Jean, great view of fascinating medioeval town, lovely composition with a lot of people, excellent perspective, wonderful colors and splendid light, very well done, my friend, have a good Sunday, ciao Silvio

Ancient architectures are more durable and some are more beautiful than modern buildings, I can see why tourist would flock to stone skyscraper. Nice to have the people for sense of proportion. Well done, tfs.

lá Jean
