The Abbey of San Galgano Abbey is a Cistercian abbey, situated about thirty kilometers from Siena, in the municipality of Chiusdino.
The site consists hermitage (called "Round Montesiepi") and the great abbey, now completely ruined and reduced to merely walls, a destination for tourists. The lack of the roof - which highlights the articulation of the architectural structure - this is common to those of the abbey of Melrose and Kelso in Scotland, of Tintern in England, to Cashel in Ireland and Eldena in Germany.
It is a jewel of Romanesque art, a beautiful Cistercian abbey which now has a grass floor and roof of the sky.

Hi Silvio.

I'm drawn to old buildings such as this one, I like the feel of what was once. You capitalised on positioning here with the light in such an attractive way cutting through these columes. I also like the inclusion of people and the bright sky to contrast with the stonework, tfs

stv ;o))

Bonjour Silvio
Maybe if you look at http://armorance.free.fr/valarmor/valouest/paimpol1.htm , you will not be astonished with the similitude between the Abbaye de Beauport in Brittany (to add to your list...)and San Galgano. But the light is different here with wonderful dof, and details.I like these ruins of abbayes, open to the air with a light inside that was only seen by their ancient builders in old times
Bon weekend Silvio

Hi Silvio,
Great architecture and awesome POV to capture this glorious lighting. A very beautiful play with light and shadows. The people are giving scale to this splendid presentation.

Hi Silvio, the open windows in the front are eye catching - and then my eyes turned to the beautiful ancient walls with their shadows.Splendid light and I like the open roof part -
