Lunghezza ala anteriore mm. 18-23

Note: sverna come larva, il cui sviluppo puņ durare due anni. Le uova sono deposte singolarmente sulla pianta nutrice: quando nascono le larve hanno vita solitaria e si impupano direttamente sul terreno nello strato erbaceo.

Maschio: colore bruno scuro con fascia postdiscale rossastra nelle ali anteriori. Presenti due grosse macchie ocellari nere ravvicinate, vistosamente pupillate di bianco, negli spazi compresi tra le nervature mediane e una pił piccola tra le cubitali.

Femmina: simile al maschio ma con macchie ocellari nere generalmente pił grandi e pił numerose.

Rovescio: simile al dritto nelle anteriori. Posteriori brune con macchie ocellari prive di contorno rossastro

Distribuzione: Alpi e Appennino centro-settentrionale

Habitat: specie xerofila, frequenta i macereti del piano montano e cacuminale, da 800 sino a circa 2000 metri s.l.m.

Generazioni annuali: una sola con sfarfallamento in giugno-luglio

Piante nutrici: Poa sp., Festuca sp., Lolium sp.,.
