The Basilica.

In ancient times, the Circus of Nero, where St. Peter is said to have been crucified, was slightly to the left of where the basilica is now located. Peter was buried here in A.D. 64 near the site of his execution, and in 324 Constantine commissioned a basilica to be built over Peter's tomb. That structure stood for more than 1,000 years until it verged on collapse. The present basilica, mostly completed in the 1500s and 1600s, is predominantly High Renaissance and baroque.

Note for Jean;-

A St. Peter's Warning -- St. Peter's has a strict dress code: no shorts, no skirts above the knee, and no bare shoulders. You will not be let in if you don't come dressed appropriately. In a pinch, men and women alike can buy a big, cheap scarf from a nearby souvenir stand and wrap it around their legs as a long skirt or throw it over their shoulders as a shawl. If you're still showing too much skin, a guard hands out blue paper capes similar to what you wear in a doctor's office.

This view is from the top of the dome, it takes awhile to climb but well worth the views around Rome

Olá Steve.
Nice picture, made in low light as it is on your personal taste, which makes much of its unique photos. The scenery is superb and very good the POV chosen, both when the deep DOF.
Very funny your note to Jean.

Perhaps if you exclude the sky while shooting, the metering will bring out more details of the clouds shadow. A grande view :)

Hi Steve,
A beautiful panorama that brings up memories. As someone already commented, you could have avoided the sky to bring out the dark areas on the ground. This probably will make a nice B&W photo.

Bom dia Steve
Excellent view if this remarkable place. Your sky and colors increase a little bit of drama to the beauty of the view. good sharpness and contrast.
Um grande abraço

Hi Steve, many thanks for the advice, I will take it into consideration when packing my bags!

Not a PoV that we see very often.
Your DoF enables us to see right across the city, no obvious high buildings here.
The dark sky gives the scene drama.
I like the colour, personally b/w would have taken something away from the shot.
Tfs, regards Jean.

Wow! I like your pov of this world famous city. Awesome panoramic view. Even with the ominous clouds in the background the place look so powerful and beautiful. Would love to see those marvelous architectures. Good timing on the lighting. Well done, tfs.

What a great shot Steve! There is so much here! Really nice clouds also, which add to the shot! I wished it was more symmetrical, but sometimes we can only get where we are and there is no other alternative!

Beautiful view with great DOF, dramatic sky and white buildings, well done

Love the "dramatic light" (as usual, most of your shots do have it in them), this one is no exception, Steve ;o))

Great details and well caught sharpness from a well thought POV and with well maintained DOF.
The color contrasts are superb and clouds add another piece of drama into the scene as well.
Well done!

Best wishes,
Paras :)

HI Steve, what a dramatic scene - a brilliant presentation of the Basilica - bringing back a lot of memories from years ago. - I like the light and your POV - and because this is a dramatic place, I love the sky too ...... it fits together for me.

I like the dressing rules - actually all of your note !!

What a stunning cityscape Steve.
Apart from the historic architecture, which in itself beautiful, that low lighting...WOW !!!
Excellence, well done.

Hellow Steve,
Very interesting image with excellent depth and focus.I like the dramatic cloud build up with the scattered shadows, hence good light management.Interesting note and once again well taken MF.

bonjour Steve
great mood and large dof
I like the storm growing up here
Benoit XVI is going to Lebanon, will he succeed in pushing aside the black clouds which pile up above Christians in middle East ?

Hi Steve,
