[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note [French]
This sunset has rich tones that I tried to capture. Looking for a foreground, I choose this hollyhock. I used the flash to make it visible.
Photo taken on Ikaria island.

Alcea rosea L.
Syn.: Althaea chinensis Wall., Althaea rosea Cav.
Family: Malvaceae
Common names: Common Hollyhock [En], Rose trémière [Fr], Gülhatmi [Tu], Malvarrosa [Es], Malvarosa, Malvone [It], Stokroos [Nl], Stokrose [De], Stockros [Sv], Festőmályva [Ma], Malwa różowa [Po]

It was imported into Europe from China in the sixteenth century. William Turner, an herbalist of the time, gave it the name "holyoke" from which the English name derives.
It is a hardy perennial, and once established should flower for many years. It will grow in a wide range of soils, and can easily reach a height of about 8 ft. The flowers are a range of colours from white to dark red, including pink, yellow and orange. Different colours prefer different soils. It is naturalized in Mediterranean.
Hollyhock is stated to be an emollient and laxative. It is used to control inflammation, to stop bedwetting and as a mouthwash in cases of bleeding gums.

Though I am not a fan of using flash during shooting but I understand, sometimes it is necessary to apply one, Catherine, and this is a particular example of that!

I like the great color tones in the sky and perfect BG for such kind of shots. I have also taken a similar shot but during noon hours. Hope to post that sometime :) Vertical framing works very well for this shot.

best regards,

Hi Catherine,
A fine macro of this flower with the colors of sunset at the BG.
A very sharp image with fabulous lighting helped by the fill-in flash which in this case worked formidably!
Very neat work.
My best regards,

Francis Xavier

Bonhour mon amie Cathy,

Marvelous macro capture of this hollyhock with nice details and vibrant colours! I like the great contrast between the subjects and the blurry BG. The sharpness and POV are also great MF!

Et il n'y avait pas de vent , et oui à 1/30 s le risque était élevé mais ça a fonctionné. Belle définition de l'iamge , sans grains, une spécialité que tu maîtrises superbement bien , celle-ci est sensas !
