[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is one of my few sunset shots. I once failed to get hired by a newspaper's press photo dept. because my portfolio had too many sunsets! This was shot from the beach in Roatan. Roatan, an island off the coast of Honduras, is one of the few undiscovered wonders of the Caribbean. It is still largely undeveloped and relatively inexpensive. Its main attraction is to divers - it has a huge coral reef. We stayed in Half Moon Bay where the main street was still unpaved. Restaurants sit on their own little piers out on the water. The population of Roatan consists of English-speaking 'islanders' who are descendants of Africans who were brought to work the plantations. Hispanic mainlanders from Honduras call them 'caracoles' - meaning snails.
It was still pretty rustic when we went. My wife had the hardest time there. She went on a horseback ride on the beach, but was almost thrown off when her horse went under a low-hanging branch. Then we all rented motor scooters - my daughter and I on one, and my wife on the other. She was run off the road by a local who didn't like tourists. We took her to a resort dive clinic where they X-rayed her and found out nothing was broken - just a lot of gravel rash. Needless to say, she has no desire to go back to Roatan.
This was shot with my trusty Canon A80. Saturation and sharpness brought up just a little. Notice the depth of field at f2.8 with this short focal length lens.

Hi Gilbert

A wonderful tropical sunset with good graphism & silhouettes of the palm fronds. I like the deep blue colour contrasting against the small areas of oarange sky. Superb sharpness. Tfs!

Olá Gilbert,
Awesome capture and presentation. Excellent POV/DOF, great colors and details.
Compliments,
Raimundo

Hi Gilbert!

Great note! I don't understand why places that survive on money from tourist don't seem to like them much.

Gilbert, I would appreciate it if you'd help me understand something. I don't know what an A80 is, but should I expect to capture a DOF like this photo with a short lens? I have just purchase a 105mm Nikon micro lens, which has a f2.8 setting. Will this lens take sunset photos? I've never taken a sunset photo, but will have an opportunity in Sturgeon Bay next week. I truly appreciate any advice you can give me.

Oh, awesome photo! I think I should ask you if there's a place that you haven't visited?

TFS

Hi Gilbert,

The palms in the fg add an interesting perspective to the shot and frame the boat well. The colors are gorgeous, but don't make me feel blue at all. It is amazing what that lens delivers. TFS

Werner
