The mountain valleys of Vietnam’s far north are home to colourful mountain tribes from all across Asia. During our Sapa tour we visited the Black H’mong and Red Dzao. These mountain tribes have lived very secluded lives far away from the outside world for many years. Today, most of them wear traditional dress and still live according to ancient customs.

The mountainous Northwest of Vietnam is not only dramatically beautiful, with towering peaks and dramatic tumbling rice terraces, it is also home to a plethora of colourful tribal minority groups that have largely retained their traditional ways of life.

The biggest ethnic group in the Sa Pa area are the Black Hmong, who wear intricately stitched costumes dyed with indigo. They are also great silver smiths and the women are usually heavily laden with neckbands and bracelets.

Other tribes in the area include the Red Dao (pronounced zow) whose women-folk shave their foreheads and wear brilliant bright red headdresses with woolly baubles dangling from them, the White Tai, Flower Hmong, Lao Leung and Sapho - the poorest of the local groups.

Hi Tsilla,
A beautiful capture of this traditional costume, so colorful against such a misty atmosphere. Interesting to see the chap playing with his camera.
Well done,

Francis Xavier

Hi Tsilla,
A colourful and interesting capture. They still retain their traditional dresses but uses modern gadgets such as cell phones and cameras.

The last time I visited my old country, the Philippines, I was really dismayed to find cell phone towers in pristine and beautiful forest but that's progress I suppose. Nice capture of this person with bright colored dress. I like the effect of the fog. Well done, tfs.

Hi Tisilla,
Clear evidence that nobody can do without modern technology. :) Like the contrast captured in this photo between the agient and modern and the contrast between the colored clothing and the dark BG. Sharpness could have been better.
I love those colorful boots he's wearing.

Hello Tsilla, there seem to be so many contradictions in this picture! What seems like traditional dress until you look more closely and see the purple wellingtons! The person playing with some gadget or other;and the small motor bike and cables in the bg.
The mist means that we cannot appreciate further the landscape, but never mind.
Thanks for sharing, regards Jean.

Ciao Tsilla, lovely composition with nice boy in beautful costume, wonderful colors and excellent clarity, very well done, my friend, ciao Silvio

Excellent Tsilla. You've captured the difference between tradition and modern very well with this. The colours are bright in an otherwise dull, misty scene.

Nice angle. Good choice of portrait format too.

Cheers, DAvid
