The arched bridge connecting Ulgi Park to Daewangam Rock, in the East Sea (Sea of Japan).

"Located a short walk from Ilsan beach, clustered together and leading into one-another are Ulgi and Daewangam park along with Daewangam rock. These are must see sights for anyone travelling through or staying in Ulsan.

Climbing the stairs viewable in the distance from the beach and walking along the alleyway past worn amusements, restaurants and sleeping Ajumma’s will bring out almost to the entrance of the park.

A popular spot for families, couples and local tourists Ulgi park provides a bit of a get-away from the sound of industrial bustle. Not the sights however.

Draped with cherry trees either side visit in spring to view the beautiful blossoms. This is also the location Daewangam park, one of the twelve scenic sights of the city. The pine trees here are over one hundred years old and for a moment you might forgive yourself for thinking that you’re somewhere in Oregon or Washington - only for the slightest of moments however.

A stroll through the park will allow you brief tempting glimpses of the ocean out through the side of the trees. Then Ulgi lighthouse appears in the distance a famous guiding light in the east sea.

Just beyond this you will come to the sight that everyone knows about from photographs literature around Ulsan: Daewangam rock.

King Mummu, the 30th king of the Silla dynasty achieved unification of the countries of the Korean peninsular in AD 668 and upon his death desired to become a dragon to protect his kingdom from enemies. Thus he was buried under a great rock in the East Sea and became a guardian dragon. However his rock is up the coast somewhat in Gyeongju but his queen is right here in Ulsan. She became Daewangam rock.

When she died she also decided to become a guardian dragon because she could not forget his noble deed of her husband. It is said seaweed does not grow around this rock because of the dragon.

Take whatever you will from these legends - to some they’re a sacred reminder of Korean history to others they’re just beautiful geological rock formations.

This history lesson aside reaching the end of the trail after crossing the blue and yellow bridge will bring you to a little fenced outpost with views out over the ocean. It’s very windy and a place for contemplation."

Hi Chris,

Interesting capture of lines and curves. I like how we only get a hint of the height of this bridge. The fact that we see the top of the support structure almost creates a feeling of vertigo. TFS

Best regards,
Werner

Love the graphism of this wonderful compo

Hi Chris - This is an interesting study in lines and diagonals. Good contrast and color. I was in Korea in the 80s. Beautiful place, but avoid the tanker trucks full of night soil!
Have a nice day,
Gilbert

Chris,

Great architecture perspective. Colors are nice.
It would have being nicer if you had only the kid on the bridge, but I guess having more people was not your choice :)

I like the strong sequential shadows on the bridge.

Super lines in this composition!
This is a very dynamic creation, and the artistic

Strong contrast works well here!

Hi, Chris -
I've been away from TL awhile and missed this great post. I like the perfect symmetry created by the POV from the center of the foot bridge; wonderful straight and curved lines with the diagonal shadows adding a nice contrasting graphic. Sharp details. Very nice work.

HI Chris..nice shot...well composed and balanced..nice details.

Roger

Hi Chris,
A fine example of natural lines and lines created by man. Excellent brightness and contrast. The red and yellows enhances the effect. Excellent idea well observed and presented!
Hans

Great shot Chris ... a little step away from your usual scenic shot. Love the diaganol lines, the perspective taking our eye into the shot, and the vibrant rich colors. The people add an interesting element. Nice one.
Has winter reached you yet?
Hope you are well
Trudy

Some very impressive light and shadow in this shot - especially the shadows of the rails on the bridge, and the strong lines of its perspective leading to a vanishing point at the upper 1/3rd.

Ciao Chris, fantastic perspective on wonderful bridge, splendid alternating light and shadows, very well done, have a good week end, ciao Silvio

Excellent DOF. The sun was perfect for the shadows.
