Apologies for the poor technical quality, but this is a photo of a photograph actually taken in 1945, just after the atomic bomb explosion. Over 140,000 perished in the firestorm & from subsequent radiation sickness & cancers. I read that many people died after drinking the water from the black rain which fell just after the bomb. Bear in mind that this was midsummer, when temperatures in Japan are high thirties,(celsius) & humidity is around 90%. The reflections within the Peace Park memorial building could not be avoided. I added an unsharp mask of 0.35 p.

Perhaps it should be compulsory viewing for Kim Il Jung? North Korea detonated its first atomic bomb on October 9, 2006. News items I read claimed it was only 1/20th the size of the Hiroshima explosion. I added a workshop, showing the same area in August 2006.

It makes you think. Thanks for posting this photo.

On top of the cold war we had 30 times over kill in the world
We where able to blow up the world 30 times.
A lot of countries in the world have nuclear weapons.
USA, Russia, England, France, India, Pakistan Israel are able to build one.
Other countries have store nuclear weapons build by others.
How do we think we are to tell others not making one if we have one.
How do you trust most USA, Russia or North Korea or Iran
The US start the war in Iraq for oil and use all his old fireworks that became useless in that country. How do you tell your child not to smoke if you use a pack a day?

A nice statement, Chris; I can see why you posted this one, and the other shot as a bonus. 61 years have passed since Hiroshima and Nagasaki, but have the leaders of the world learnt anything at all from past mistakes ?
Thanks for showing the ws version, as it gives us a nice impression of man's power to overcome disaster. Which, unfortunately, seems to be much less than man's power to create disaster >:-(

The danger of power. If you upset the universe it will eventully have it's revenge on you. A very strong image.

Hi Chris,

A very heavy duty photo! I think you caught a strong message with this very sad photo. I guess everyone should see this every day, ALL DAY, including Kim Jung II & those responsible who dropped it in the first place! Powerful image, dude!

Hi Chris,
Very strong message for all the world leaders, to consider the consequences playing with fire! Well done!

Hi Chris. Interesting story here about this day of atomic radiation. Your photo shows well enough to see the effects and why it should be kept as a "big stick" but not have to be used again. TFS. Murray.

Hi Chris

A real significant shot..of one of the History's bitter event. Hope the nuclear powers sees this shot of yours and think & think about all.

Thanks for sharing.
