Mango is commonly known as the king of fruits and belongs to the genus Mangifera, which consists of numerous species that bear edible fruits in the flowering plant family Anacardiaceae (cashew family). Mango is one of my favorite fruits, as the pulp of the fruit and its juice provide instant energy during the desert-like summer months in India.
About one thousand named mango varieties can be found all around the world, which is a testament to their value to humankind. Mango is a common garden tree in tropical regions. When ripe, this delicious dessert fruit is particularly high in vitamin A. The fruit also plays an important part in the sustenance of birds, bats, insects and mammals.
