During the murderous Pol Pot years, from April 1975 to 1979, (when Vietnam overthrew the regime), thousands of dancers like these women were executed. Their crime? Displaying 'decadent' burgeois tendencies. Over 1.5 to 2 million people were murdered (12% of the entire Cambodian population), in the infamous 'Killing Fields' of Cambodia. From 'Wikipedia':

"Pol Pot's regime killed between 1.5 to 2.3 million people between 1975-1979. By some accounts, nearly one out of every eight Cambodians was murdered. The regime targeted Buddhist monks, Western educated intellectuals, people who appeared to be intelligent (for example, individuals with glasses), the crippled and lame, and ethnic minorities like ethnic Laotians and Vietnamese."

Fortunately, the dance & art movements went underground, & resurfaced again in the 1980's & 1990's. Taken at night in dim lighting with very agile dancers, so it was hard to focus.

Apsara Dancing dates from the 12th century & earlier, & was introduced to Cambodia from India, during the height of the Angkor Wat Kingdom.

You've captured the grace and elegance of these dancers well. Just a shame their eyes are closed!

Hi Chris,

The photo is very nice despite the light dificulties!
I like your POV! Great sharpness and vivid colours! Very traditional composition!
Well done and TFS :)

Constantinos

Aha! Bring on the Dancing Girls! About time! And most delectable and nubile they are too.
Tough job but someone has to do it and you did it well, considering the conditions. I tried something similar in Bangkok and failed miserably. I like the demureness of the closed eyes! Good one, then!

Hi Chris,
Very good picture of these very pretty ladies.
Sunil

I saw dancing all over the world, but I missed this kind. Now I get a glimpse. Very fancy for sure.

we don't see many people photos from you Chris :) making this photo even better :)

you captured their grace very nicely, i don't mind the grains from the low light
this is a well framed photo

Hi Chris,
You have "frozen" the graceful hand gestures of these Cambodian dancers. Good balance of posture: one front and one back. Expect to see your other captures of these pretty ladies.

Very beutiful and timely catch Chris! You managed to use the right speed so as not to blur the interesting and intricate jewelries nd dress decor. Very well done!

Hello Chris, such good notes and instructive on this very nice photo of these dancers. So sad to read what happened to them.

You did very well in account of the light condition you had and that they were moving al the time.

You managed to have good sharpness and colours.

Take care, Yan :)

Very beautiful Chris
The colors and vivid and the girls are truly beautiful.

Gosh, I can't imagine why they get kill, is sad to hear, it is the traditional dance. Glad you captured this one, even thought is dim lighting, they all look clear, sharp, vibrant and excellent lighting. TFS

Beautiful shot! The dancers are caught in a graceful moment, the colors are vivid and despite the lighting difficulties the exposure very good. Well done!
Vassilis

Hi Chris,

Wonderful picture
the look is fantastic, and
the lightness and the dancers' delicacy
it is surprising.
Congratulations, beautiful show!

Sorry for my absence Chris!

I am having a hard time to visit everybody these days! I obviously missed a few great shots at your place! (^_^)

Woohoo! This is a stunning Note! Excuse my ignorance, but I had no clue that this genocide happened so recently!

Human Nature is really weird at times. Perhaps the difficult times, the traditions continues... Unfortunately the bad ones too. :(

Cheers my friend !
Robert

Hi Chris,
wonderful photo of 2 beauties. Nicely composed, with very good light especially that exposure conditions were difficult as you wrote. The note is freezing - thanks for the detailed, yet horrible informations. tfs

Great picture and very instructive notes! I notice here a lack of details in the dresses but the focus being on the faces of those beautiful dancers,it still give us here a good moody picture! Well composed! Michel

good picture, you've captured the mood very well.A pitty the knees of the first are cut off.the colours are very good, so is the dof.

lovley rich colors & well composed shot.
tfs

Hi Chris, Very good POV to get the two dancers into the frame. Good use of the available light and great clairty. Interesting if horrific note. Murray.

Great work, very good note,
beautiful colors, good shrpness and compo
well done, thx

Hello Chris,

very interessting photo. Perfect light balance and very sharp.

Good work!

Martin

Excellent sharpness.

This is a great shot of the women. Colours are vibrant and well saturated. However, the background, in my opinion, ruins the shot. It simply detracts far too much from the women. I know you may have had no other option, but it still seems that way to me.
