Facts about Devbed.
The Devbed (also called Debed) – is not only the deepest river in Armenia but also the most contaminated one. In some areas of the gorge the river flows through, the maximum concentration limit of nitrate ions is exceeded 7.5 times and that of sulphate 6.5 times. On top of all, the river is literally under the threat of thousands tones of waste burdened with different metals. The river basin which makes 13% of the territory of the Republic, inhabits 393 thousand people. The sources of the river industrial pollution are the following big enterprises: Vanadzor "Prometheus Chemical Industry", Tumanyan Plant of Refractory Materials, Alaverdi Metallurgical Plant now belonging to the Company "Armenian Coper Project" (ACP). |
